Aethos Monterosa

Hotel

Europe, Italy

From $327

Aethos Monterosa is a five-star Alpine lodge in Champoluc, in Italy’s Aosta Valley, set at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif near the Swiss border. Formerly known as CampZero, it was built around mountain sport and still keeps that spirit, with its own indoor ice-climbing wall, bikes to explore Val d’Ayas and easy access to the Monterosa Ski area. Around fifty rooms and suites are finished in warm wood and stone, many with valley or mountain views. Guests unwind in a full spa with an indoor pool, saunas and a fitness area, and two restaurants serve hearty Alpine dishes before and after a day on the slopes or the trails.

The Brecon

Hotel

Europe, Switzerland

From $800

The Brecon is a 22-room hotel in Adelboden, a village in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland, set inside the timber frame of a hotel first built in 1914. Founded by Welsh-born Grant Maunder, whose family has skied here for four decades, it was redesigned with the mood of the ’60s and ’70s in mind: Jean Gillon chairs, wool weaves from Wales, a library and art selected by Bisou Gallery. All meals and drinks are part of the stay, from breakfast and afternoon tea to dinner at the chef’s table and nightcaps in the lounge. A guest-only spa, with saunas and a heated outdoor pool facing the mountains, sits a two-minute walk from the ski lifts.

Piaule Catskill

Hotel

North America, United States

From $499

Piaule Catskill is a landscape hotel set on 50 acres of forest in Catskill, New York, about two and a half hours from the city. Founded by Nolan McHugh and Trevor Briggs, creators of the homeware brand of the same name, and designed by Garrison Architects, it is made up of 24 freestanding cabins raised on stilts, each with a glass wall facing the Catskill Escarpment, white oak and cedar interiors, bluestone floors and furniture made by Piaule. Below the main house, a spa built into the hillside holds a hot pool, a cold mineral plunge, a sauna and a steam room. Meals are served at the restaurant in the main lodge, and trails lead from the cabins into the surrounding woods.

The Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage

Hotel

North America, United States

From $698

The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage sits on a cliff above the Coachella Valley in southern California, a short drive from Palm Springs, with wide views across the desert floor. Its 244 rooms start at 450 square feet, and several suites include a full kitchen. The resort has two outdoor pools with cabanas and poolside bars, a sauna and a 24-hour gym. The Ritz-Carlton Spa has 15 treatment rooms, including suites for couples and outdoor treatment areas. Restaurants focus on California cuisine, and complimentary bicycles and fitness classes are available for guests. Palm Springs International Airport is about eight kilometres away, which makes the resort an easy weekend escape from Los Angeles.

Juvet Landscape Hotel

Hotel

Europe, Norway

From $430

Juvet was the first landscape hotel in Europe, built in Valldal on Norway's west coast, about 90 minutes inland from Ålesund. Its rooms are small wooden cubes raised on stilts among the trees, each with full-height glass walls facing the valley, the forest or the gorge of the Valldøla river below. The interiors are kept dark on purpose, so nothing competes with the view. Guests can also stay in the old farmhouse, mill house and barn, and dinner is served together in the barn each evening at 7:30, made with local ingredients. The bath house frames a bend in the river, and the hotel sits on the scenic route between the Geirangerfjord and Trollstigen. Film fans may recognise it from Ex Machina.

Deplar Farm

Hotel

Europe, Iceland

From $4,000

Deplar Farm is a remote adventure lodge set in Iceland’s Fljót Valley, surrounded by the mountains of the Troll Peninsula. Once a working sheep farm, the property has been transformed into an intimate 13-room retreat combining Icelandic architecture with an extensive wellness area, including an indoor-outdoor geothermal pool, sauna and flotation tanks. The landscape drives the experience, with heli-skiing in spring and hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding during the warmer months, while its highly inclusive approach covers meals, drinks and most guided activities.

The St. Regis Le Morne

Hotel

Africa

From $970

The St. Regis Le Morne sits on one of Mauritius’ most spectacular stretches of coast, with a long white-sand beach in front and the sheer silhouette of Le Morne Brabant rising immediately behind the resort. The all-suite property has the feel of a grand colonial seaside manor, with wide verandas, tropical gardens and butler service throughout, but the setting is what makes it extraordinary: calm lagoon water for swimming and paddleboarding, strong trade winds for kitesurfing and sunsets that turn the mountain almost theatrical. Five restaurants, a large spa and direct access to one of the island’s most iconic beaches make it an easy place to stay put for several days.

Desert Rock

Hotel

Asia, Saudi Arabia

From $2,400

Desert Rock is built directly into the ancient granite formations of Saudi Arabia’s Hejaz Mountains, turning the landscape itself into part of the architecture. Its 64 keys — 54 villas and 10 suites — range from valley retreats to cliff-hanging villas and cave suites carved into the rock, all with private pools and wide desert views. The resort sits around 20 minutes from Red Sea International Airport and balances the drama of its setting with a spa, several restaurants and guided mountain experiences such as hiking and via ferrata.

La Residence

Hotel

Africa, South Africa

From $1,706

La Residence sits amid 30 acres of vineyards, orchards and gardens in the Franschhoek Valley, with mountains rising dramatically behind its terracotta-coloured buildings. Inside, restraint is nowhere to be found: chandeliers, antiques, jewel-toned fabrics, oversized artworks and individually designed suites give the hotel the exuberance of an eccentric collector’s country house. There are just 11 suites in the main hotel, plus five more private Vineyard Suites scattered among the vines, several with their own pools; meals draw heavily on produce from the estate, and afternoons are easily spent between wine tastings, spa treatments, the pool and long terrace lunches overlooking the valley.
