Cozy Stays for Fall

The fall edit, October 2026 Cozy Stays for Fall

Autumn naturally invites us to slow down, turn inward and embrace a quieter rhythm before the colder months arrive. A season for rest, reflection and a little more time spent indoors. Even better when surrounded by nature, with a fireplace nearby and landscapes turning shades of amber, orange and gold.

Our selection of cozy fall getaways takes us from mountain retreats in the Austrian and Swiss Alps to vineyards in Portugal’s Douro Valley, the English countryside, the Norwegian fjords and the forests of New York State. Seven hotels that feel particularly fitting for this time of year.

Naturhotel Forsthofgut

Leogang, Salzburger Land, Austria From $325
Naturhotel Forsthofgut began as a forestry estate more than four centuries ago and has remained in the same family for five generations. Today, it is one of Austria’s most complete alpine retreats, surrounded by forest and mountains in Leogang, with direct access to skiing, extensive outdoor activities and a 5,700-square-metre forest spa. Despite its growth, the original farming and forestry heritage remains visible throughout the property, giving the hotel warmth and character beyond its polished wellness offering.

Juvet Landscape Hotel

Valldal, Møre og Romsdal, Norway From $430
Juvet was the first landscape hotel in Europe, built in Valldal on Norway's west coast, about 90 minutes inland from Ålesund. Its rooms are small wooden cubes raised on stilts among the trees, each with full-height glass walls facing the valley, the forest or the gorge of the Valldøla river below. The interiors are kept dark on purpose, so nothing competes with the view. Guests can also stay in the old farmhouse, mill house and barn, and dinner is served together in the barn each evening at 7:30, made with local ingredients. The bath house frames a bend in the river, and the hotel sits on the scenic route between the Geirangerfjord and Trollstigen. Film fans may recognise it from Ex Machina.

Casa do Rio Douro Hotel by Vallado

Douro Valley, Portugal From €280
Casa do Rio occupies an isolated stretch of the Douro Superior, surrounded by Quinta do Vallado's organic vineyards and overlooking the river. There are only ten rooms, and the architecture sits lightly within a vast natural amphitheater of terraced vineyards, olive groves and valleys, allowing the landscape to dominate almost every view. Wine tastings, meals and days spent on the river turn the property into a particularly intimate way to experience one of Portugal's most impressive wine regions.

Piaule Catskill

Catskill, New York, United States From $499
Piaule Catskill is a landscape hotel set on 50 acres of forest in Catskill, New York, about two and a half hours from the city. Founded by Nolan McHugh and Trevor Briggs, creators of the homeware brand of the same name, and designed by Garrison Architects, it is made up of 24 freestanding cabins raised on stilts, each with a glass wall facing the Catskill Escarpment, white oak and cedar interiors, bluestone floors and furniture made by Piaule. Below the main house, a spa built into the hillside holds a hot pool, a cold mineral plunge, a sauna and a steam room. Meals are served at the restaurant in the main lodge, and trails lead from the cabins into the surrounding woods.

The Six Bells Countryside Inn

Rosendale, New York, United States From $400
The Six Bells Countryside Inn occupies a red-brick boarding house built in 1850 on Main Street in Rosendale, a small Hudson Valley village about two hours from New York City. Created by Audrey Gelman as an extension of her Brooklyn home goods shop, the inn has eleven rooms designed by Greco Deco around Barrow Green, an invented English village, with canopy and box beds, hand-painted wardrobes and antiques sourced piece by piece. Much of what you see can be bought in the shop downstairs. The Feathers, a tavern and riverside restaurant run with Molly Levine, serves early American country cooking, and the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and the Rosendale Trestle are a short walk away.

THE PIG – in the Cotswolds

Gloucestershire, England From $335
THE PIG – in the Cotswolds occupies Barnsley House, a Grade II-listed 17th-century manor of honey-coloured stone in the village of Barnsley, four miles from Cirencester. It was once the home of Rosemary Verey, and the Arts and Crafts gardens she laid out here, her first, still frame the house with a laburnum walk, a knot garden, potagers and a Tuscan temple. Twenty-four rooms are spread across the main house, the stable yard, the potting shed and a secret garden, ranging from small doubles to garden hideaways with freestanding tubs. The restaurant cooks from a 25-mile menu built around the kitchen garden, the hotel’s own Village Pub sits across the lane, and a small spa with a sauna and an outdoor hydrotherapy pool is tucked at the end of a garden path.
Hotel

The Brecon

Adelboden, Bern, Switzerland From $800
The Brecon is a 22-room hotel in Adelboden, a village in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland, set inside the timber frame of a hotel first built in 1914. Founded by Welsh-born Grant Maunder, whose family has skied here for four decades, it was redesigned with the mood of the ’60s and ’70s in mind: Jean Gillon chairs, wool weaves from Wales, a library and art selected by Bisou Gallery. All meals and drinks are part of the stay, from breakfast and afternoon tea to dinner at the chef’s table and nightcaps in the lounge. A guest-only spa, with saunas and a heated outdoor pool facing the mountains, sits a two-minute walk from the ski lifts.
