  • Cozy Atmosphere

“An extraordinary piece of architecture that knows Patagonia should always be the main event.”

Tierra Patagonia stretches almost horizontally along the shore of Lake Sarmiento, with the Torres del Paine massif filling the horizon beyond it. The architecture follows the natural curve of the land and uses local lenga wood extensively, allowing a 40-room hotel to remain surprisingly discreet within such a monumental landscape. Days revolve around guided hikes, horseback riding and excursions across Patagonia, followed by long views of the mountains from almost everywhere inside.

Explora Rapa Nui

Hotel

South America, Chile

From $1,850

Explora Rapa Nui sits alone among the island’s open grasslands, far from Hanga Roa and surrounded by one of the most mysterious archaeological landscapes on Earth. Designed by Chilean architect José Cruz Ovalle, the low-slung lodge follows the contours of the volcanic terrain, with 30 rooms overlooking the Pacific or gardens. The real reason to stay is access: guided hikes, cycling and coastal explorations lead to moai, ancient settlements and volcanic sites while introducing Rapa Nui through its history, landscape and living culture.

Awasi Patagonia

Hotel

South America, Chile

From $1,793

Awasi Patagonia has only 14 freestanding villas, each positioned for privacy and direct views towards Torres del Paine and Lake Sarmiento. Set within a private reserve, the lodge is surrounded by native forest and open Patagonian terrain where guanacos, condors, foxes and occasionally pumas can be spotted. Every villa comes with a private guide and 4x4, allowing the experience to be planned around each guest rather than a fixed excursion schedule.

Southern Ocean Lodge

Hotel

Oceania, Australia

From $2,200

Southern Ocean Lodge sits on the limestone cliffs above Hanson Bay, on the wild south-west coast of Kangaroo Island, a short flight from Adelaide. Destroyed by bushfire in 2020, it reopened in late 2023 under its original architect, Max Pritchard, with 23 suites strung along the coastline, a central Great Room and a new four-bedroom Ocean Pavilion. The lodge runs almost entirely off-grid, powered by solar and battery systems and supplied by rainwater and an aquifer, while works by island and South Australian artists fill the interiors. Stays are all-inclusive, with menus built around local growers and fishermen, an open bar, signature island experiences, a spa and transfers included.

Tu Tu’ Tun Lodge

Hotel

North America, United States

From $290

Tu Tu’ Tun Lodge is an adults-only retreat on the north bank of the Rogue River, seven miles upriver from Gold Beach on the southern Oregon coast. A family-owned lodge since the 1970s, it is surrounded by dense forest a few miles from the Siskiyou National Forest, far from the busier stretches of the Pacific Northwest. Rooms, suites and riverside houses open onto the water, with stone fireplaces and wood interiors throughout. Days are spent kayaking, fishing, hiking or taking jet boat trips upriver, with an outdoor pool, a sauna and massages back at the lodge, and dinner is served family-style each evening.
