Portugal Stays to Know in 2026

Where to Stay in Portugal, October 2026 Portugal Stays to Know in 2026

Portugal may be a small country, and perhaps precisely because of that, it is surprising how, in just a few hours, you can find such different and authentic landscapes. Even close to its cities, Portugal can sometimes feel like a trip back in time.

Add to that a rich coastline running from north to south, fresh and delicious food, abundant sunshine and a strong wine culture, and it quickly becomes one of the most attractive destinations for an easy trip, and one that is unlikely to ever go out of style. Here are our favourite stays in Portugal right now.

The Yeatman

Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto, Portugal From $430
The Yeatman rises above Vila Nova de Gaia, surrounded by the historic Port wine cellars and looking directly across the Douro towards Porto. Wine is not a decorative theme here but the core of the hotel, from its extensive cellar and vinotherapy spa to a restaurant with two Michelin stars. The sweeping city views, particularly from the infinity pool and terraces, make it one of Porto’s most recognisable luxury stays.
Hotel

São Lourenço do Barrocal

Monsaraz, Portugal From $505
São Lourenço do Barrocal is a restored 200-year-old farm estate near Monsaraz, spread across 780 hectares of olive groves, vineyards, pasture and archaeological sites in the Alentejo. The former agricultural buildings have been converted into rooms, suites and cottages while keeping the whitewashed walls, vaulted ceilings and practical simplicity of the original monte. The estate still produces wine, olive oil, vegetables and livestock, and much of the stay revolves around that working landscape, from horseback riding and cycling to pottery, archaeology and wine experiences.
Hotel

Vintage Hotel

Lisbon, Portugal From $185
The Vintage is a 56-room hotel in a renovated 19th-century building on a quiet backstreet near Lisbon's Botanical Garden, a short walk from Avenida da Liberdade and the Bairro Alto. Its rooms are decorated with mid-century furniture, bold work by local artists and Portuguese ceramics, and each has a cocktail trolley with a gin and tonic kit created by the hotel's mixologist. On the fourth floor, the open-air V Rooftop Bar looks out over the city beneath a vertical garden. The hotel also has a spa with a pool and the Blue Bistrot restaurant. Many of Lisbon's best-known sights are an easy walk downhill, and the Marquês de Pombal metro station is close by.
Hotel

Marqí

Colares, Sintra, Portugal From $230
Marqí is difficult to categorise, which is part of its charm. Set in Colares near Sintra, the hotel mixes Portuguese details with a playful visual language that moves between 1970s California, 1980s Danish design and vintage Mediterranean references. Colourful tiles, marble, retro lighting and eccentric objects give the property more of a private creative house atmosphere than a conventional hotel.
Hotel

Casa do Rio Douro Hotel by Vallado

Douro Valley, Portugal From €280
Casa do Rio occupies an isolated stretch of the Douro Superior, surrounded by Quinta do Vallado's organic vineyards and overlooking the river. There are only ten rooms, and the architecture sits lightly within a vast natural amphitheater of terraced vineyards, olive groves and valleys, allowing the landscape to dominate almost every view. Wine tastings, meals and days spent on the river turn the property into a particularly intimate way to experience one of Portugal's most impressive wine regions.
Hotel

Vale Palheiro Earth Resort

Aljezur, Portugal From $250
Vale Palheiro is a small resort in a 280-acre valley near Aljezur, on Portugal's southwest coast, within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. It was created by Pedro and Madalena Rutkowski, who moved to the area more than ten years ago. Madalena, an architect, designed its 13 villas, suites and casitas with Lisbon's Arkstudio, and they were built with local craftsmen using taipa, a centuries-old technique of compressing earth by hand into thick walls. Rooms have fireplaces and heated floors, and the houses are spread up the hillside above a stretch of the Aljezur River. Guests can go horse riding, forage for dinner, taste local wines or join a cooking class in the communal kitchen, and the surf beaches of Arrifana and Monte Clérigo are a short drive away.
Villa

Sublime Comporta

Comporta, Alentejo, Portugal From $570
Sublime Comporta spreads across a 68-hectare estate of umbrella pines, cork trees and sandy terrain near Portugal’s Atlantic coast. Suites and villas are dispersed throughout the property, allowing privacy and nature to remain central, while the hotel has grown into a complete destination with multiple restaurants, spa experiences and a beach club. Its style captures the relaxed sophistication that made Comporta internationally recognisable without losing the region’s rural character.
Hotel

Reid’s Palace, A Belmond Hotel

Funchal, Madeira, Portugal From $800
Reid’s Palace is one of Madeira’s great historic hotels, surrounded by subtropical gardens high above the Atlantic in Funchal. Its old-world interiors, terraces, afternoon tea tradition and ocean-facing pools preserve the glamour of a grand resort while the island’s vegetation and dramatic coastline keep nature constantly present. It is formal in all the right places, but Madeira gives it a brightness and tropical quality that stops it from becoming too serious.
Hotel

The Rebello Hotel & Spa

Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto, Portugal From $300
The Rebello occupies a collection of historic riverside warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia, once closely connected to Porto’s wine trade and industrial waterfront. The original stone structures have been converted into a contemporary hotel while retaining their large volumes, masonry walls and industrial character, with views directly across the Douro towards Porto. Add a rooftop, spa and the changing light over the river, and it becomes one of the more interesting recent additions to the city’s hotel scene.
