Why we love

  • Oceanfront rooms
  • Earthy minimalism
  • Surf coast

“Nine rooms on Ahangama’s coast, where the Indian Ocean is the main attraction.”

The Find is a nine-room, adults-only hotel on the beach in Ahangama, on Sri Lanka's southern coast. Every room faces the Indian Ocean, and the interiors are kept minimal, in earthy browns and sand tones, with pieces by local artists and a few touches of gold. The hotel deliberately keeps its offer simple, with no packed schedule of activities, so days are shaped around the sea and the slow pace of the coast. Ahangama has become one of the island's quiet hubs for surf, art and small, independent stays, with well-known breaks like Midigama nearby, and the old Dutch fort of Galle is a short drive away.

PALM

Hotel

Asia, Sri Lanka

From $150

PALM brings a distinctly modernist edge to Sri Lanka’s tropical south coast, replacing the area’s familiar colonial villas with black steel, corrugated metal, polished concrete and floor-to-ceiling glass. Its A-frame cabanas sit among coconut palms and dense greenery, while the central pavilion, built around repurposed shipping containers, brings the restaurant, bar and pool together around a single palm tree.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge

Hotel

Asia, Sri Lanka

From $735

On Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast, Wild Coast Tented Lodge brings together safari, wildlife and the beach in a setting that remains unusually rare. Bordering Yala National Park and the Indian Ocean, the lodge is made up of cocoon-shaped tents and pavilions that together trace the outline of a leopard’s paw, a reference to the park’s most iconic resident. The suites combine canvas shells, four-poster beds, freestanding copper bathtubs and jungle-facing glazing, while the setting places coastal vegetation, wild shoreline and one of Sri Lanka’s richest wildlife areas within the same stay.

Sowaka

Hotel

Asia, Japan

From $1,050

Sowaka is a 23-room luxury hotel in Gion, Kyoto’s historic geisha district, a two-minute walk from Yasaka Shrine. Its main building is a restored ryotei from the Taisho era, built in the sukiya style and more than a century old, joined by a modern annex added in 2019. The renovation kept the decorated ceilings and windows, patterned timber, clay walls and sliding paper screens, while each room is individually designed, some with tatami and garden views. Dining centers on seasonal kaiseki-inspired cooking at Gion Loka, and the hotel also has a bar and a courtyard garden lounge. The name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning “may happiness be with you.”
