Why we love

  • Fictional hostess
  • Art in every room
  • Rooftop social club

A 1920s Kolonaki mansion that feels less like a hotel than the home of an eccentric, art-loving friend, where every suite tells a story and Athens comes to mingle on the roof.

Shila occupies a neoclassical mansion from the late 1920s on Mantzarou Street, a quiet pedestrian lane in Kolonaki, Athens’ most cultured neighborhood, a short walk from the Benaki and Cycladic Art museums. The original terrazzo floors, high ceilings, wrought iron and marble details have been kept, and the house is imagined as the world of a fictional hostess named Shila. Its six suites each have their own character, from 1960s-inspired rooms with fine art photography to bohemian suites under the roof, all furnished with vintage pieces and works by Greek artists. There is a garden courtyard, a library that doubles as a gallery, breakfast baskets of Greek specialties delivered to your suite, and a roof terrace lined with banana trees.

The Selene

Villa

Europe, Greece

From $511

The Selene is a much-loved private house overlooking Nimborio Bay, with five suites, two acres of terraced gardens and its own steps leading down to the Aegean. Whitewashed walls, painted shutters, old timber, woven textiles and antique pieces give the interiors the feeling of an actual Greek island home rather than a polished resort, while breakfast under the olive trees, long dinners on the terraces and swims in the bay become the natural rhythm of a stay here. Symi’s main harbour is only three kilometres away, but the house feels wonderfully removed from it, with little more than gardens, rocky hills and exceptionally clear water filling the view.

Casa Mediterraneo

Hotel

Europe, Greece

From $350

Casa Mediterraneo occupies three restored mansions rising above Kastellorizo’s harbour, their burnt-orange façades and sage-green shutters borrowing directly from the colours of the island. Inside, only six suites combine local limestone, timber, cement tiles, antique marble hammam basins and mid-century furniture with an easy summer-house atmosphere. Breakfast brings Eastern Mediterranean flavours to the sea-facing terrace, followed later in the day by sunset aperitivo overlooking one of the Dodecanese’s smallest and most remote inhabited islands.

Acro Suites

Hotel

Europe, Greece

From $650

Acro Suites is carved into a rocky headland above the Cretan Sea, with 47 suites and villas designed around stone, concrete, timber and the raw contours of the site. The Cave Suites are the property’s most distinctive rooms, partially built into the cliff itself and opening onto private pools with uninterrupted sea views, while the rest of the resort continues the same material language through terraces, villas and wellness spaces. Its bamboo yoga shala, Byzantine-inspired bath house and strong focus on movement, nutrition and restorative treatments give the hotel a much more immersive identity than a conventional seaside resort.

Sowaka

Hotel

Asia, Japan

From $1,050

Sowaka is a 23-room luxury hotel in Gion, Kyoto’s historic geisha district, a two-minute walk from Yasaka Shrine. Its main building is a restored ryotei from the Taisho era, built in the sukiya style and more than a century old, joined by a modern annex added in 2019. The renovation kept the decorated ceilings and windows, patterned timber, clay walls and sliding paper screens, while each room is individually designed, some with tatami and garden views. Dining centers on seasonal kaiseki-inspired cooking at Gion Loka, and the hotel also has a bar and a courtyard garden lounge. The name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning “may happiness be with you.”
