Kruger Shalati
HotelAfrica, South Africa
From $1,000
Kruger Shalati is a hotel set in a restored train, permanently parked on the Selati Bridge above the Sabie River at Skukuza, in South Africa's Kruger National Park. It revives a century-old tradition: in the 1920s, visitors to the park would spend the night in a train on this same bridge. Today, 24 carriages have been turned into suites with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river, and seven more suites sit in a garden on the riverbank. The pool hangs over the side of the bridge, so guests can swim while elephants, hippos and crocodiles pass in the water below. Days follow the rhythm of a safari, with two game drives, all meals and afternoon tea included, and walking safaris and in-room spa treatments can be added.
La Residence
HotelAfrica, South Africa
From $1,706
La Residence sits amid 30 acres of vineyards, orchards and gardens in the Franschhoek Valley, with mountains rising dramatically behind its terracotta-coloured buildings. Inside, restraint is nowhere to be found: chandeliers, antiques, jewel-toned fabrics, oversized artworks and individually designed suites give the hotel the exuberance of an eccentric collector’s country house. There are just 11 suites in the main hotel, plus five more private Vineyard Suites scattered among the vines, several with their own pools; meals draw heavily on produce from the estate, and afternoons are easily spent between wine tastings, spa treatments, the pool and long terrace lunches overlooking the valley.
Sterrekopje Healing Farm
HotelAfrica, South Africa
From $1,350
Sterrekopje feels less like a retreat and more like entering a beautifully imagined world of its own. Set across 50 hectares at the foot of the Franschhoek Mountains, the farm combines just 11 highly individual sanctuaries and suites with regenerative gardens, orchards, animals, a Bath House and an Atelier for painting, ceramics and other creative practices. Guests can move between treatments, long lunches made largely from produce grown on the farm, time with the gardeners and farmers, bread-making, beekeeping and slow afternoons by the pool — all with the intimacy of a private estate rather than a traditional hotel.
The Silo
HotelAfrica, South Africa
From $1,545
The Silo rises above Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront inside a former grain silo transformed into one of the city’s most striking contemporary landmarks. Thomas Heatherwick’s pillowed glass windows turn the industrial structure into something almost sculptural, opening dramatic views towards Table Mountain, the harbour and the Atlantic. With Zeitz MOCAA directly below and contemporary African art throughout the hotel, The Silo is not simply a place to stay, but one of Cape Town’s most powerful intersections of architecture, art and city life.
