“Salt, clay and candlelight at the edge of the Great Sand Sea”.

Adrère Amellal rises from the edge of Siwa like part of the desert itself, built almost entirely from kershef — the local mixture of salt, clay and straw — beneath the White Mountain and overlooking the oasis and salt lake. Its 40 hand-built rooms are deliberately elemental, with palm-trunk ceilings, Siwan rugs, salt beds and tiny shuttered windows, and there is famously no conventional electric lighting: after dark, beeswax candles and lanterns take over. Meals use produce from the lodge’s organic gardens and are served in different corners of the property each day, while a natural spring feeds the palm-shaded swimming pool and excursions head into the Great Sand Sea, ancient temples and Siwa’s springs.

Al Moudira

Hotel

Africa, Egypt

From $330

Al Moudira is a 54-room hotel on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, set between desert and farmland, about four kilometres from the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and the Temple of Hatshepsut. Although it was built in 2001, it looks centuries old, with Moorish arches, domes and courtyards decorated with arabesque details. Each room is individually designed, with stone, tile, gold leaf and antique furniture. Life revolves around the central courtyard and the palm-filled gardens, with a pool, Turkish baths and four restaurants. The hotel holds two Michelin Keys. Its seclusion is part of the appeal, and the east bank of Luxor is reached by car or by the ferries that cross the Nile throughout the day.

Mena House

Hotel

Africa, Egypt

From $480

Mena House sits directly beneath the Pyramids of Giza, turning one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites into part of the everyday view. The historic hotel began life as a royal hunting lodge in the 19th century and still carries that sense of old Cairo grandeur through landscaped gardens, arched interiors and rooms facing the pyramids. Its greatest luxury is the location itself: sunrise and sunset over Giza, with the plateau just minutes away and Cairo unfolding beyond it.

Sowaka

Hotel

Asia, Japan

From $1,050

Sowaka is a 23-room luxury hotel in Gion, Kyoto’s historic geisha district, a two-minute walk from Yasaka Shrine. Its main building is a restored ryotei from the Taisho era, built in the sukiya style and more than a century old, joined by a modern annex added in 2019. The renovation kept the decorated ceilings and windows, patterned timber, clay walls and sliding paper screens, while each room is individually designed, some with tatami and garden views. Dining centers on seasonal kaiseki-inspired cooking at Gion Loka, and the hotel also has a bar and a courtyard garden lounge. The name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning “may happiness be with you.”

Southern Ocean Lodge

Hotel

Oceania, Australia

From $2,200

Southern Ocean Lodge sits on the limestone cliffs above Hanson Bay, on the wild south-west coast of Kangaroo Island, a short flight from Adelaide. Destroyed by bushfire in 2020, it reopened in late 2023 under its original architect, Max Pritchard, with 23 suites strung along the coastline, a central Great Room and a new four-bedroom Ocean Pavilion. The lodge runs almost entirely off-grid, powered by solar and battery systems and supplied by rainwater and an aquifer, while works by island and South Australian artists fill the interiors. Stays are all-inclusive, with menus built around local growers and fishermen, an open bar, signature island experiences, a spa and transfers included.
